Shopping
The small shops that line the narrow streets of the Old Quarter sell a wide range of merchandise from traditional Turkish carpets, hand made silver jewellery to ceramics, spices and the more usual tourist souvenirs.
When in Kalkan, like the rest of Turkey, there are some items not to be missed. Gold and silver jewellery is of a high standard and prices compare favourably to the UK. A wide range of carpets are also to be found, from flat woven Kilims in cottons and silks to heavier hand knotted wool carpets with natural dyes and tribal patterns. Contrary to popular belief the prices of these items in the town are favourable to the carpet and gold centres to which the tour companies take their guests.
Hand painted ceramic ware, glass ware, the inevitable fake designer bags, belts, watches and clothing will also allure you. It is customary for the shop owner to offer Turkish or apple tea to his guests and if you are interested in buying then take your time. Like many things in Turkey, buying is not a rushed process and shop owners will expect to spend time with you.
It is a common belief that you should haggle for everything in Turkey. Whilst this is true to some extent, please be aware that shop keepers have overheads and may not be ready to bargain as much sellers in the local market. Most shops will accept credit cards, but the best prices are generally to be had if you offer to pay in cash.
Kalkan has a local market on Thursdays, which is well worth a visit just for the locally produced fresh fruit, vegetables, olives and cheeses. In summer the market also has a wide range of stalls with fabrics, house wares and tourist items.
